Punk Expo @ The Met

5 Punk chaos to couture met new york copy

Like with so many things in fashion, punk is having a second moment. Or was it a third moment? Fourth, even? Anyways, punk is en vogue and the Costume Insitute at The Metropolitan Museum is hosting a exhibition which will examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the early seventies, through its continuing influence today.
Punk: Chaos to Couture features approximately one hundred designs for men and women, the expo will include original punk garments and recent fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear borrowed and still borrows punks visual symbols. If it’s anything like the opening party to the Met Ball they recently hosted – remember Madonna in her spikey outfit? – we definitely want to go see it ourselves. The perfect excuse to visit NY. The expo is on from today till August 14th, so enough time to get your punk on. [EH]

Terry takes over

5 Terry Richardson Doutzen Kroes Valentino H&M

Terry Richardson – you either love him or you hate him. In case of the first option you’ll be happy to find out that the controversial American photographer is no longer strictly behind the camera, but seems to feel as at ease in front of it.
In Valentino’s Fall 2013 accessories campaign, which will debut in fashion magazines around the world starting today, Richardson’s hands and tattooed forearms are seen holding the brand’s Rockstud handbag and shoe – both in signature Valentino red. Maria Grazia Chiuri, the brand’s creative director, told Womens Wear Daily that the images are supposed to evoke “the sensual yet elegant nature of our accessories, described as objects of desire”.
Speaking of objects of desire: Terry Richardson is also the lucky bastard to shoot our very own Doutzen Kroes for fashion retailer H&M’s summer 2013 campaign. The Dutch topmodel posed for him in Mexico for the advertisements showcasing lightweight styles of the season. Busy days for Terry indeed, so for all of you out there raising eyebrows: you better start loving him for your own wellbeing – there is no escape. [EH]

The Great Gatsby

The great Gatsby Miuccia Prada costumes

Looking for some cinema chique inspiration? Your wish will soon be fulfilled with the premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby, a film that will not only offer a pack of amazing actors, but also a breathtaking set of costumes which will make you feel like you’re visiting a 1920’s ball.
The movie won’t be released until May 12th, but New Yorkers can already get their fashion fix at the Soho Prada store where a selection of costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and costume designer Catherine Martin is on expo from 1 – 12 May. Definitely worth stopping should you be in the neighbourhood. Not so lucky? Closer to home you will find actress Carey Mulligan, who plays the roll of Daisy in the upcoming movie, gracing the cover of Vogue May in a Gatsby inspired look, and she can also be seen on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK June issue, looking lovely in a dreamy pink Prada coat with red flowers.
Oh, if only we had a time machine… [EH]

King Bowie is

It has opened just days ago, and although it may not be on the list of die hard art purists, it is already the most popular exhibition ever to hit the Victoria and Albert Museum in London: the show devoted to rock star David Bowie.
A total of 50,000 tickets were already sold in advance, and has therefore broken box-office records, according to a Reuters report.
‘Davis Bowie is’ feautures objects from the flam-rock singer’s personal archives and includes more than 300 objects, including 60 plus stage costumes from his Ziggy Stardust period.
The exhibition follows the recent release of Bowie’s new album ‘The Next Day’, (and the mini-movie) which shows us the mastermind behind the artist. At the private viewing stars like actress Tilda Swinton, artist Tracey Emin and model David Gandy were invited, and later literally every British celebrity, art lover and fashion addict flocked to the champagne soaked opening.
But not Bowie himself. Nor will he go on tv or radio. No, it is his notable absence at the centre of this madness that makes him as magical as he is. And we love him for it. [EH]

Ode to Abraham

You don’t really think about it, but great minds like Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Cristóbal Balenciaga didn’t come up with all of their great work by themselves. They had great minds accompanying them, working with them, creating with them.
One of those helpers was the Swiss textile firm Abraham, a company that was specialized in printing silks and delivered exclusive fabrics to these designers. Today, the Abraham archives are housed at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, but from March 13th till August 11th, Belgian fashion museum MoMu in Antwerp will host a collection of colourful textile prints along with couture silhouettes by all of the designers mentioned above. Go see the exhibition if you can, and combine the trip with some serious fabric shopping on your own. Hey, great minds need help too right? [EH]

David Bowies new muse: Saskia de Brauw

Doutzen Kroes might be most famous Dutch model in the world, but Saskia de Brauw definitely is the coolest.
Why? Because she was chosen to perform in David Bowie‘s newest video “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).” In the video, Tilda Swinton plays Bowies wife, while androgynous models-of-the-moment Andrej Pejic and Saskia de Brauw play a Sid & Nancy-esque celebrity couple. Bowie and Swinton are a quiet, happy couple whose world is turned upside down by the two, in more ways than one.
It is androgyny at it’s best, and it only emphasizes Bowies everlasting love affair with the fashion world. And the song itself? Who cares, it’s David Bowie. [EH]

Karl Lagerfeld Exposition

Flying off to St. Moritz Switzerland for a ski vacation, or already there perhaps? Make sure you don’t miss out on Karl Lagerfeld’s exposition titled “Fire Etchings”, which opened yesterday at the Galerie Gmurzysnka.
It features images of rapper Theophilus London and models Freja Beha Erichsen that have been etched onto the surface of giant glass panels with acid and fire. “Nothing is more exciting than something new – a new material, a new spirit, an new technique, a new point of view, a new expression, a new feeling,” Lagerfeld said. ‘That’s right for fashion and for photography.”
A bit too modern for your taste nevertheless? Also on display is a series of delicate 1996 portraits by Lagerfeld on handmade paper that revived a forgotten technique from early photography: colortinting black and white images via a process involving honey and rubber. That must sound soothing after a hard day’s work at the slopes. [EH]

Miu Inspiration

The Door is a short new film by Ava DuVernay, and it’s the fifth of the Miu Miu Women’s Tales.
The official storyline says it’s “a celebration of the transformative power of feminine bonds and a symbolic story of life change.” But before you think is yet another pretentious piece of Brad Pitt-commerce, we suggest you watch the film: it’s actually quite down to earth and real. You can feel the strong bond between women.
Short story: it’s about a woman who is really, really sad (because of a man, of course) and her female friends (and mother?) that come and take care of her. It is filmed beautifully, the music takes you away and the acting is very real. Only one question remains: who on earth could be sad with that house, that view and that set of Miu Miu clothes? O, right, I guess that’s the whole purpose of the film. [EH]
