Royal Dutch Change

Unless you were in a spa for a full day treatment, it is obvious that we’ve had a change of crown today in Amsterdam. Queen Beatrix signed her abduction in favour of her son Willem-Alexander and his Argentinian wife, Máxima. It was all about Royal Traditions and Royal gowns in Royal blue today. And we loved every minute of the ceremony.
But most important (life is all about priorities, right?) we adore the inauguration dress designed by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau for – as of today – Queen Máxima. Mesmerizing, stunning and oh so Royal. We have a bright royal fashionabe future ahead. Hail to the Queen. [KB]

Gisèle & Christy support Mothers

She used to be a supermodel, now she is a super earth mother. After quitting the catwalk, 44 year old Christy Turlington – who in her heyday made superhugh money wearing designer clothes – has turned her mind to more philanthropic matters. Her organization Every Mother Counts aims to raise money to provide better medical care for pregnant women in poor countries.
Recently Christy teamed up with LA brand Ergobaby to customize a range of products, including African print baby carriers, and now it has caught the attention of fellow charity crusader Gisele Bundchen. Bundchen, who gave birth to baby girl Vivian in December last year, has been proudly posting photos on Instagram and Facebook of Vivian tucked up in her Ergobaby Carrier. Being cute, cuter, cutest while supporting women in need – not only supermodelbabies can do that, so can you.
Well, if you happen to have a baby of course. Maybe next project will be African print dog carriers, Christy? [EH]

Beyonce @ the beach for H&M

She has the best voice, the greatest moves, the most powerful hubby and she ain’t lackin’ in the cute department either: Beyoncé is the absolute Queen Bee of her time.  Both pop – and stylewise.
And now she is also the new face of H&M. The singer stars in the Swedish retailer’s new high summer campaign, and boy, are they beautiful. In the images and smashing video we see her relaxing on a beach sun lounger, posing in very hot swimwear and dancing on the beach. Knowing that the pictures we’re shot at the Bahamas earlier this year by none other than Dutch pride Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, makes it even more beautiful.
The campaign is accompanied by a press release where they talk about things like “fun”, “affordable” and “four elements”, but you just want to see it right?
Here you go. [EH]

Dress like a Princess

She is the Crown Princess of Denmark, wife of Frederik, originally from Australia and she dresses in… H&M. While visiting the president of Finland and his wife for an official dinner party, Princess Mary (41) was seen in a beautiful H&M gown coming from their Conscious Exclusive Collection.
Earlier on actresses like Amanda Seyfried and Michelle Williams were seen in H&M Ecocouture on the red carpet, but with Mary as their unofficial ambassador, the status of their line has definitely kicked up a notch.
Mary and Frederik met at the Slip Inn, a pub in Sydney, when the Prince was visiting Australia during the Summer Olympics. Their marriage was soon portrayed as a modern ‘fairytale’ romance between a prince and a commoner. If you can emphasize your ‘normalness’ with a 300 euro dress, and still manage to look like a million dollars, we’re all for it. Go, Mary! [EH]

Beauty by Miss Lipgloss

Cynthia Schultz is one of the first Dutch beauty bloggers and is always a few steps ahead. No wonder, since she started blogging when she was 16. Those were the days, uhu.
Yesterday, 5 years later, she launched her first book on Beauty at the Amsterdam Andaz Hotel. The book reveals her insights on beauty with tips & tricks from a pro and is so very Cynthia. Open and honest, always with a wink and a smile. I think format and paper (matt!) are quite important and this one is easy to browse through. Curled up on the couch with herbal tea and goij berries at hand.
My favourites subject? How to make the perfect brow or blend a flawless foundation. It’s all in there! [KB]

The Iron Lady

She was the first – and only – British woman ever to hold the role of Prime Minister, and was loved, loathed and lauded during her term. Her preference for victorian values was a little bit too much for our taste, but when it comes to powerdressing she sure was one of the first women to put it on the map.
Margaret Thatcher, who died yesterday at the age of 87, was always able to make Tory ministers go weak at the knees because of the combination of power shoulders, pearls, a brooche and round toed Ferragamo heels.
According to her daughter Carol, her aim was to look like an executive, but always managed to stay feminine too: a fact that might have been responsible for the French president Francois Mitterand comparing her eyes to Caligula’s and her lips to Monroe’s.
Thatcher rather put it this way: “Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” Amen. [EH]

King Bowie is

It has opened just days ago, and although it may not be on the list of die hard art purists, it is already the most popular exhibition ever to hit the Victoria and Albert Museum in London: the show devoted to rock star David Bowie.
A total of 50,000 tickets were already sold in advance, and has therefore broken box-office records, according to a Reuters report.
‘Davis Bowie is’ feautures objects from the flam-rock singer’s personal archives and includes more than 300 objects, including 60 plus stage costumes from his Ziggy Stardust period.
The exhibition follows the recent release of Bowie’s new album ‘The Next Day’, (and the mini-movie) which shows us the mastermind behind the artist. At the private viewing stars like actress Tilda Swinton, artist Tracey Emin and model David Gandy were invited, and later literally every British celebrity, art lover and fashion addict flocked to the champagne soaked opening.
But not Bowie himself. Nor will he go on tv or radio. No, it is his notable absence at the centre of this madness that makes him as magical as he is. And we love him for it. [EH]

Michelle Obama: First Class

Just when we thought she could not get any cooler, Michelle goes out and seals the deal by covering Vogue’s April issue for the second time, ánd having her hubby Obama tagging along.
The most powerful couple in the world was photographed by Annie Leibovitz – who else? – and in the accompanying interview they speak about “living their lives on their terms: not as the First Family but as a family, first”.
Michelle is wearing a asymmetrical Reed Krakoff dress out of her own closet and Kimberly McDonald geode-and-diamond drop earrings, and the president just looks cool, calm & collected in classic shirt/clock/tie as ever.
Michelle was already a hot search term after getting bangs, and hits will probably sky rocket after this baby comes out. Michelle keep her head cool though. “If you’re comfortable in your clothes it’s easy to connect with people and make them feel comfortable as well.”
True First Class, we say. [EH]

Tina en Vogue, Simply the Best

It has taken her 73 years to get there, but she’s finally made it: living legend Tina Turner is gracing the cover of German Vogue as she appears on the April 2013 issue of the famed fashion publication’s German edition – and is therefore the oldest person ever to be at the cover of Vogue.
At 73, Turner surpasses Meryl Streep, who became the oldest when she covered US Vogue’s January 2012 issue at age 62. Tina surpasses her by a decade and looks beautiful doing so, dressed in a midnight blue gown by Armani. The only thing missing on the cover is those great endless legs, but luckily there’s more inside…
Either way: we love Tina, we love her attitude, we love her music and we sure love how she always comes back for more.
Here’s to hoping this cover marks the beginning of a new world tour. [EH]

Viktor & Rolf: where the magic happens

They are without a doubt Hollands best export product when it comes to fashion, and boy are we proud of ‘m: designers Rolf Snoeren and Viktor Horsting, alias Viktor & Rolf.
With everyone who has ever reached something extraordinary, we are super super curious to find out where the magic exactly happens. Where do these men come up with their ideas for the ready to wear collections, for their famous fashion presentations, their collaborations, or even for their fragrances?
It’s a question Vogue must have asked themselves too, because they came up with the wonderful idea of photographing them in their Amsterdam based office. In this seventeenth century grachtenpand (canalhouse), formerly owned by a mayor, you can see their true inspiration: books, sketches, mantelpieces, porcelain dolls, the garden and their dogs Little Swan and Vickie. Cute! [EH]
