Over the last year the prices of major luxury brands have increased rapidly. For example, from 2009 to 2014, the cost of a (medium) Chanel Classic Flap bag has increased by 70 percent. By upturning their prices, brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton seemed to have pushed entry-level customers out of the luxury handbag market. One reason for this increase in prices is to maintain a sense of exclusivity. But this same exclusivity presents a large problem for these brands. For most fashion houses, this large group of entry-level consumers contribute to a substantial part of their profits. With the prices of handbags rising, this group is now unable to afford a standard medium-sized designer bag.
The affordable Mini
To solve this problem many luxury brands have introduced smaller versions of their classic bags. Everyone from Fendi to Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton is issuing its classics in delectable doll-size versions. Think of the micro Céline Luggage Tote, the mini Hèrmes Birkin or the micro Lady Dior bag. The house of Louis Vuitton has even introduced an entire Nano collection of their showstoppers. As smaller pieces require less materials and are quicker to manufacture, they are often cheaper than their larger counterparts. The trend of these miniature bags might just be kickstarted by price increases, but that doesn't make these designs any less adorable.
