Céline Classic Box Bag

17 May 2016

Only real fashion lovers will know Phoebe Philo was not the creator of the Box bag, but that this popular piece was actually a re-design an old Céline bag. The Box bag has been worn on the shoulders of women since the 1970’s. The original Box bag, had the same iconic shape as the redesigned one. But the biggest difference between the two bags is the closure, which was originally embellished with a vintage Céline logo, a beautiful horse and carriage logo. The original gold metal clasp also had the brand name Céline positioned right under the logo. It is extremely hard to find a vintage Box Bag that is still in good condition, that’s why women are paying a huge amount of money to get their hands on one of these vintage treasures.

The new Box bag
In 2008 Phoebe Philo was appointed as the new creative director of Céline. Philo and Céline were a instant match. Philo’s vision for Céline became the new trademark of the French fashion house: classic, minimal designs and logo-free accessories with unique shapes. She successfully redesigned many of Celine’s classic designs, one of them being the Box bag. She stripped it of its horse and carriage logo and the newly designed box bag was an ode to minimalism, featuring a plain and simple gold locket.

The Box bag is typically made of calfskin but has also been made in several other materials like Crocodile, Python, Cobra, Lizard and Pony Hair. But not only the outside of the bag is made from fabulous leather, it also features buttersoft leather lining. The Celine boxbag comes with a detachable strap that can be adjusted to two different lengths. No wonder the bag is a celebrity favorite and has been worn by celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Chiara Ferragni, Reese Witherspoon, Celine Dion and Alessandra Ambrosio.
