Chanel Classic Flap Bag vs. Boy Bag

27 June 2016

Although the Boy Bag is a newcomer compared to the Classic Flap, it has become so popular with customers that many find it hard to make a choice between the two.

The first bag that Coco Chanel designed in 1929 was a hand-carried, just like all other bags that were available to upper-class women during that era. But in 1995 Coco Chanel changed handbag history with the introduction of the Chanel 2.55. It was modified for practical reasons. "I got fed up with holding my purses in my hands and losing them, so I added a strap and carried them over my shoulder.” It was none other than Karl Lagerfeld who reintroduced the design in the eighties and created the Classic Flap bag.

It was also Karl Lagerfeld that introduced the Boy Bag as a tribute to Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel was very tomboy-ish and she was often inspired by menswear. Her biggest muses were her beau's and the love of her life: Boy Capel. Karl Lagerfeld paid a tribute to the men in her life with the birth of the Chanel Boy bag.

Boy bag vs. Classic Flap
The main difference between the two bags is that the Boy bag is more bulky and modern than its Classic Flap sister. The Boy bag has a very chunky and square shape compared with the Classic Flap. The Boy bag is more structured and boxy with straight lines and angular corners. Its streamlined look makes it a more modernized version of Chanel’s classic flap and the chunkyness adds to casual feel of the design. Furthermore the chain of the Boy bag is broader and has darker, more antique looking hardware compared to the more sophisticated chain of the Classic Flap, which is interwoven with leather. Next to this, the Boy bag is lined with cloth rather than leather and features a square lock that opens with push claps, instead the iconic interlocking CC closure.
