Chanel Couture Show Spring '19 without Karl Lagerfeld

29 January 2019

While Karl Lagerfeld himself always appears during the final scene of his shows, he did not make it to the Haute Couture Show in Paris last week. Instead, Virginie Viard, his right hand, received the applause. The show took place at the Grand Palais and was again decorated in a fairytale style, including swimming pool, palm trees and graceful Victorian staircase.

The question whether Karl Lagerfeld (who has been in charge since 1983) will resign as creative director of Chanel, has been around for a while. Nevertheless, nothing has been confirmed so far. This is what Chanel says in a statement:

"For the final scene at the end of the show, Mr. Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel - who felt tired – asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the fashion house, to represent him and greet the guests next to the bride. Virginie Viard as creative studio director and Eric Pfrunder as Chanel's director of image will continue to work with him and run the collections and campaigns as planned.'

So for now there is nothing going on and we hope that the designer will feel better soon!
