Hedi Slimane has been appointed as the new creative director of Céline

01 February 2018

Hedi Slimane has been appointed as the new creative director of Celine and will be replacing former creative director Phoebe Philo. Before Hedi was appointed as the new creative director, there were speculations that Hedi would be joining Karl Lagerfeld in creating a menswear division at Chanel. This turned out to be nothing but a rumor. This consequently means good news for Céline fans because the brand remains in an artist's hands.

Hedi Slimane was born on the 5th of July 1968 in Paris and was raised by his Tunisian father and Italian mother. At the age of 11, he started to become interested in photography and by the age of 16, he started making his own clothes. After studying Art History at the École du Louvre and completing a tailor apprenticeship at a men’s designer house, he became a photographer and a designer. One of his first big jobs was assisting fashion consultant Jean-Jacques Picart on the “monogram canvas” project of Louis Vuitton.

In 1996, he started working for Yves Saint Laurent for a couple of years as ready-to-wear director. A few years later, he rejected the offer of creative directorship at Jil Sander and accepted the job as creative director of menswear at Christian Dior. In 2002 Hedi received the Council of Fashion Designers of America award, which was presented by David Bowie. He was the first menswear designer to receive this award. In March 2012, Hedi returned to Yves Saint Laurent and replaced Stefano Pilati as creative director.

Phoebe Philo announced her departure in December and will show her last collection in March. Her successor will commence his role in February and his first collection will be debuting at Paris Fashion Week, which will be held in September. Under Hedi’s new role, he will oversee and develop all collections and the brand is planning to launch menswear, couture and fragrances. Even though we are truly going to miss Philo's amazing skills and sense of fashion, we are excited to see where the talented Hedi Slimane will take the brand!
