20 April 2016

The house of Louis Vuitton has a wide range of materials to choose from. It can be quite the ordeal when deciding between an Alma in Epi, Monogram or Vernis. We've provided the ultimate guide to help you purchase your perfect bag.

Monogram canvas
The most iconic of all the Louis Vuitton materials: the LV Monogram canvas. The design of the canvas was designed by Louis’s son, George Vuitton in 1896. He made the design to distinguish the Louis Vuitton trunks from imitator trunks. The flowers in between the initials were inspired by Japanese designs which were popular during the Victorian era. The canvas itself was a revolutionary product at the time. Canvas is a woven material that’s made from cotton. Today the canvas is more durable and water-resistant than most other leathers.

Damier Ebene and Damier Azure canvas
The Damier canvas print was created even before the LV Monogram canvas in 1888. Although they do come in other colors he Damier Ebene and Damier Azure are the most recognizable colors. Like the Monogram the Damier Canvas is made of coated cotton canvas. This makes the bags completely water resistant and durable. If you’re not always careful with your bags it’s best to choose for this type of material as you do not have to worry about stains or scuffs.

Monogram Vernis leather
Vernis is the French word for varnish, which explains the shininess of this type of leather. The Monogram Vernis was introduced by Marc Jacobs in 1998 shortly after he was appointed as the Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton. It is made of embossed calfskin leather which is coated with a patent finish that gives the material a shiny look. Bags made of Vernis are both feminine and vivacious. However they are more susceptible to scratches and stains. Vernis has a tendency to scratch and chip and can easily pick up ink stains from newspaper or printed items.

Epi leather
Epi leather was introduced in 1985 and was inspired by a grained leather Louis Vuitton used in the 1920’s. Before being dyed, the Epi leather is tanned with plant extracts. Additionally, special painting techniques are used to give it a two-toned quality and a resistance to water and scratching. Bags made from Epi leather come in all different colors, as Epi leather makes every color look bright and beautiful. However it should be kept away from anything abrasive.

Empreinte Leather
Empreinte leather was released in 2010 by Louis Vuitton. It is made from the highest quality of calfskin, which makes it a very supple, durable and easy to take care of. A bag made of this material will therefore last a lifetime. However the bags made of Empreinte leather are heavier and less rigid than bags made of canvas.
