The most expensive designer bags in the world

09 September 2015

Five-figure handbags have recplaced the € 600,- Manolo Blahniks of the post-Sex and the City nineties. But status bags didn't start in the nineties. In the 1930's we saw the birth of the first it-bag, the Speedy from the house of Louis Vuitton. In the eighties we saw a roomier, softer bag in the shape of the Birkin which was named after Jane Birkin. The Sex and the City-era marked the heydays for the Fendi Baguette, which came in dozen versions and had long waiting lists.

Designer bags as investments
However, it was only recently that the handbag prices really peaked. Suddenly it became acceptable to splurge thousands of dollars on bags an shoes. We began to think about accessories as investments and collector items.

The most exclusive Hermès Birkin ever made
The ultimate test was held in 2005, when hen Doyle New York auctioned a black crocodile Hermès Birkin with a diamond-covered clasp and lock. It sold for over €50.000. Though the brand name counts, price is also determined by material; anything in ostrich, python or crocodile tends to up the ante. Most labels offer their most popular bags in several skins.

Ofcourse this was a one of a kind bag, but what are the most expensive bags at the moment?

  1. Hermès Birkin in Croc Porosus Lisse
  2. Lana Marks Cleopatra Bag
  3. Chanel Croc Biarritz
  4. Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork Bag
